On Saturday August 27, more than 500 community members came out to Kingston Avenue to celebrate at our S.O.S. Back to School Play Street! The two blocks on Kingston between St Johns and Eastern Parkway were filled with a dunk tank, DJ booth, book give away station, popcorn, cotton candy, food grilling, an inflatable obstacle course, bounce house, a basketball hoop, soccer classes, carnival games, balloon tossing, dancing, and a video games truck. We also gave away more than 450 backpacks filled with school supplies to students!
We are so thankful to the representatives from 30+ community organizations who shared information about their programs and hosted arts and educational activities at their tables. During the Play Street we also had a medical van which provided physicals throughout the day, a mobile legal van from The Legal Aid Society, an Emblem Health tent, and a book van from the Brooklyn Public Library. We were excited to see Assemblywoman Diana Richardson as well as representatives from other anti-violence programs including Guns Down Life Up and KAVI. We hope that everyone who took part in this day felt this was a celebration of peace, education, and community building.
Special thank you to Senator Jesse Hamilton who collaborated with us to make this event possible!
