On Friday, October 20th, Save Our Streets Crown Heights held our 8th Annual Fall Fish Fry. One hundred and sixty-one people attended the small community event. Attendees included local Crown Heights residents, staff from the Crown Heights Community Mediation Center, the Center for Court Innovation, the Mayor’s Office to Prevent Gun Violence, and local Cure Violence sites including Brownsville In, Violence Out, came together to share food, music, and dance. Throughout the event, S.O.S. Crown Heights staff members served free fish (whiting), rice and peas and salad to community members. As well, youth from the Anti-Gun Violence Employment program tabled to give away information about Mediation Center programs and Save Our Streets branded items.
Throughout the event, there was a festive atmosphere that promoted mingling between elders, kids, and other community members. The event culminated in a children’s dance contest, and the two winners received $25 gift cards from the “Gap” and “Nike”. Overall, the event provided a fun, safe time for all, and promoted the message of #stopshootingstartliving.
