This April, the Make It Happen program was the subject of the Center for Court Innovation’s podcast, ‘New Thinking.’ Through interviews with Program Director Kenton Kirby, Shawn Deverteuil, Men’s Empowerment Coordinator, and participants, the podcast explores the intersections of trauma, race, and healing for young men of color. Make It Happen participants share how they were able relax and build trusting relationships within the space created by Make It Happen. Listeners will hear a breakdown of some clinical terms, as well as a critical analysis of how the criminal justice system and traditional mental health providers go wrong with young men of color. Kenton and Shawn share their expert understandings of the cycle of pain created by toxic masculinity, traumatic experiences, criminalization, and socioeconomic factors. This podcast is a must-listen for anyone who wants to gain a greater understanding of trauma and trauma reactions, and learn about the tools that Make It Happen uses to help men of color process their pain and heal.
