On September 17th, The Bedford Stuyvesant Anti-Violence Project co-hosted the Marcy on the Rise Basketball Tournament in Marcy Houses where the youth in the community played against the police department. This is an annual game that takes place in hopes of easing the tension between the police and the community. At this event, Planner Hailey Nolasco presented the Byrne Criminal Justice Innovation grant and the project’s efforts thus far. Ms. Nolasco briefly presented on domestic and intimate partner violence and the importance of healthy relationships. The project also had a singer, spoken word artists, and steppers perform during halftime and at the end of the tournament.
We thank Arey Robinson the Commissioner of Marcy on the Rise for believing in our project and opening his community to us. We would also like to thank all of our performers and volunteers for participating in this event. It was a great success!
