The Crown Heights Community Mediation Center works to build safer and healthier neighborhoods in Central Brooklyn. Our youth anti-violence group, “Youth Organizing to Save Our Streets” (YO S.O.S.), has planned an anti-violence campaign kick-off event on April 20th from 5:00-6:30pm at St. Francis de Sales School in Crown Heights. We hope you can join us!
YO S.O.S. is a youth development program that trains young people to play a leading role in the anti-violence movement. Our 20 high school participants meet throughout the school year to build their knowledge on issues of violence, conflict, trauma, self care, and to strengthen their skills as peer educators, workshop facilitators, and community organizers.
This year we have partnered with Urban Word NYC, Urban Art Beat, and Urban Arts Partnership to collaborate with our youth. They have been working with their teaching artists to put together a multimedia anti-violence campaign. It includes an original hip-hop music video, a series of spoken word pieces, and a short film all on the themes of violence prevention, resiliency, and youth leadership.
On April 20th, at St Francis de Sales School (260 Eastern Parkway), the youth will debut their collective campaign, titled ‘6 feet above,’ and speak about their projects and the issues they tackle. There will be live performances, music, video, commentary, Q&A, refreshments, giveaways and more!
